Eileen Fenton.
Remembering my middle-school days in the 70’s I went to Sandal Endowed CE Middle School. My English teacher was Miss.Fenton. She was a brilliant, albeit an ‘oldschool’ teacher. She was also our swimming teacher and ran the swimming club Wakefield’s Sun Lane baths, of which I was a member for a time.
I remembered that she was the first woman to swim the English Channel and I decided to look this up. Here’s what I found:
“Now the date was 22nd August, 1950; the time was twenty minutes past midnight. The eyes of the world were focused through television and news-reel cameras on the wet sand of Cap Gris Nez beach. Twenty-four men and women paced or stamped up and down-twenty four athletes chosen to represent a dozen nations in the most fantastic race ever held, the Cross-Channel Swimming Race organized by the Daily Mail with Jeffrey Trub.
"By the rules of the race, swimmers must clear the water and walk three yards unaided on the beach.
“Eileen Fenton, 22, a 112-lb. Yorkshire schoolteacher who, despite a strained shoulder, crossed in 15 hours 31 minutes crawled out of the water on her hands and knees to claim the £1,000 purse for women. She was one of 9 to finish out of 24 competitors (she came 6th).
“Successful on her first attempt she had 2 subsequent failures.”
Does anyone know what happened to her after she retired (I assume she retired)? Is she still alive? I would be interested to know.

I met Eileen Fenton in Batley a couple of weeks ago. She also trained me for a while. She looked no differrent than she did 35 years ago still would not argue with her.
Did not find out anything about what she is doing but she looked very well.-

I can't believe how pleased I am that Miss Fenton is still alive and well! She was a strict teacher, but very well respected (she was probably only as tall as some of the children), and a hard but very fair swimming teacher- I wouldn't be the swimmer I am today without her- and I'm quite sure that my enthusiasm for swimming has passed on, and now my five year old can happily swim at least 25 metres in three different strokes.

You can watch a video clip of Eileen Fenton speaking about her cross-channel swim in 1950 on the My Yorkshire website: www.myyorkshire.org
There is an exhibition at Tolson Museum till Sep 2008 (then on to Dewsbury Museum in October) of Kirklees Sporting Heroes, and Eileen is featured.

I was interested in your post as Miss Fenton must have been instrumental in getting me through the 11 plus in 1958. I didn't expect to. When she took us swimming to the old Dewsbury Baths we had to pass a huge portrait of her commissioned by the town council each time. My class of '58 is coming up to its 50th anniversary and I know some have gone on to eminence. It would be good to see them again.
